The
World Heritage Society is a non-profit organization established
by technology executives to develop entertaining and informative
cross-media materials that enhance cultural understanding and
promote an
appreciation
for unique people and places. It is our goal to use digital technologies
to create a permanent record of the 730 sites that have achieved
World Heritage Designation by the United Nations Educational,
Scientific
and
Cultural Organization or UNESCO.
Heritage
is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what
we pass on to future generations. Our cultural and natural
heritages are both
irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. They are our
touchstones, our points of reference, our identity. What makes the
concept
of World Heritage exceptional is its universal application.
World Heritage sites
belong to all the peoples of the world, irrespective of the
territory on which they are located. A World Heritage site differs
from
a site of national heritage in that it is deemed to possess "outstanding
universal value."
UNESCO recognizes three types of World Heritage Sites: cultural,
natural and mixed. Cultural heritage sites can be monuments,
groups of buildings, or sites with historical, aesthetic, archaeological,
scientific,
ethnological or anthropological value. Natural heritage sites
can be outstanding physical, biological or geological formations,
habitats of
threatened species of animals and plants, or areas with scientific,
conservation or aesthetic value.
When
a cultural or natural site is placed on the UNESCO
World Heritage List, that is not the end of the story.
If it is to stay on the List, the characteristics and
qualities that justified
its inscription must be preserved. Not only is it up to
the international community, it's also up to every one of us
to help save the world's
cultural and natural sites before it's too late.
The World Heritage Society is soliciting individual
and corporate donations sufficient
to embark this summer on its effort to create
a digital record of the thirty-six sites of World
Heritage Designation within the
country of Spain.
We cannot complete our important work without your help. Please send
us a quick e-mail, so that we can send you additional
information
on how
you can help
in this important endeavor.
As
an individual, you can help in many ways. Just by developing
an awareness
of the importance of our common World Heritage,
each of us becomes an active
participant. And by teaching our children that our heritage will become
a perishable commodity if ignored, we will help future
generations learn
how to care for
their heritage. You can also click here for more
information on how to participate
in one of the many volunteer projects at World Heritage sites around
the world.
Thank
you for your time and your support.
